$1 million to vets, first responders

Carry the Load is distributing more than $1 million in grants to 25 area nonprofits that operate programs for veterans and first responders.

Most of the money was awarded Thursday, and the remainder will be presented Wednesday and Oct. 11. The funds were raised at a two-day walk over Memorial Day weekend.

The beneficiaries are: 22 Kill, Adaptive Training Foundation, Assist the Officer Foundation, Equest Hooves for Heroes, Farmers Assisting Returning Military, Higher Ground, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Travis Manion Foundation, A Soldier's Child Foundation,Attitudes & Attire, Austin Street Shelter, Building Homes for Heroes, Center for BrainHealth-UTD, Gratitude Initiative, Lt. Todd Wesley Krodle Memorial Foundation, Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, Patriot Paws Service Dogs, Reboot Combat Recovery, Recovery Resource Council, Sheep Dog Impact Assistance, Trinity Oaks, Wind River Ranch, Sons of the Flag, Heroes on the Water and Snowball Express.
